Holiday binge

Holiday binge

Last Christmas I sat down with a pile of books to read over the holiday and this project was born.  The premise was simple, highlight a book a week by an amazing female author.

Even though 52 weeks sounds like a lot of time, there are so many great books by women that I have not gotten to yet, so this week, as I prepare my stack for this year's holiday binge, something a little different.

I'm highlighting 3 books that I am going to be diving into over the coming days of rest and relaxation.  Here's a brief outline:

Miss Burma by Charmaine Craig

An historical epic told through the grand sweep of one family's story that parallels that of the birth of modern Burma.  A tale of love, war and political turmoil, and the persecution of an ethnic minority Craig tells a tale inspired by her own family's history.

No One is Coming to Save Us by Stephanie Powell Watts

A factory town in decline, economic distress that stresses a marriage, echoes of Jim Crow and the guy who returns home to build his dream house and win back his childhood sweetheart.  Stephanie Powell Watts' novel has been described as having "echoes of The Great Gatsby...an extended African American family and their colliding visions of the American Dream." This book was also the first book in the new American Library Association Sarah Jessica Parker book club.  Yes, that SJP, aka Carrie Bradshaw.  I will confess I was in a book club with SJP for some time and she is an avid and discerning reader.  I'm delighted to pick up a recommendation from her.

Sing Unburied Sing by Jesmyn Ward

What is there to say except, Jesmyn Ward, winner of her second National Book Award in just a few short years.  The top of so many year end best of lists, how could it not be on my pile to tackle this holiday?

Next week I'll be highlighting some of the books I am really excited about that are coming ins 2018.

Till then, happy reading and happy holidays.

Looking forward to 2018
